After spending four enriching years overseas—three in Dubai and one in Malaysia—Heinrich and his family made the decision to return to South Africa. Continuing to work remotely on the Malaysia timezone for a company in Malaysia, he adapted to the unique challenges that came with such a transition. However, the call to root himself more permanently in South Africa became undeniable.
Just one month into embracing a new role within a South African company, life threw an unexpected curveball—a diagnosis of a brain cyst. Though not life-threatening, this diagnosis was a stark reminder of life's fragility and unpredictability. It propelled Heinrich to reassess his priorities and ambitions, accelerating his desire to fulfill his longstanding dream.
Rubigo was born from this crucible of change and reflection—a silver lining in a period of global and personal upheaval. The company embodies Heinrich's unwavering commitment to empowering non-technical individuals and businesses, transforming their visionary ideas into tangible, impactful realities. Rubigo’s journey is a testament to resilience, innovation, and the pursuit of dreams against all odds.
What’s in a name? For us, everything. ‘Rubigo’—Latin for ‘Rust’—was serendipitously discovered while Heinrich explored the Latin translation of his surname. Initially tied to plant disease, the name, peculiar yet profound, stuck. Beyond its literal meaning, Rubigo represents resilience, transformation, and the ever-evolving nature of technology—a perfect emblem for our ethos.
The dual life of managing a demanding career while nurturing a fledgling company was our first colossal challenge. The equilibrium between delivering on the high responsibilities of Heinrich's managerial role and meeting Rubigo's client commitments was precarious. In 2023, the decision to devote entirely to Rubigo marked the beginning of a new chapter, steering the company towards growth and innovation.
Rubigo's inaugural triumph was the successful launch of a custom-built platform for our first client—Aspire Assessments. This breakthrough project not only won accolades but also demonstrated the transformative power of our solutions. Since then, Rubigo has broadened its horizon, embracing design and advisory services, and significantly impacting the success of projects like the Aspire Assessments platform.
From a solo venture, Rubigo has evolved into a collective of passionate professionals. The team today includes a dedicated Digital Product Designer and a promising new graduate developer, supported by a pool of seasoned senior developers. Our aim is to expand further, welcoming new talents and projects into the fold.
